1. The target: a philosophy that turns every problem into a technology problem

2. Kurzweil mistook logarithmic hindsight for a law of nature

  • The mechanism: Kurzweil generalizes Moore’s law into a “law of accelerating returns” running through all technology and biology — back to the start of life, in places to the Big Bang — pointing at a singularity in 2045. The evidence is cherry-picked “points of interest” that form a straight line on a semilog chart, with mind-uploading as a proposed route to immortality for a man whose father died young of a heart attack: “there’s a difference between a healthy fear of death and letting it sort of run your life.”
  • Becker’s diagnosis: “unless you work really hard, history looks sort of logarithmic” — like the view from a skyscraper, the near past looms and the distant past shrinks — and Kurzweil mistakes that artifact for a true exponential. A “very understandable mistake,” but a mistake.

3. Every exponential ends — even if you stack sigmoids

  • Kurzweil’s own lily-pad illustration (half the pond on day 29, full on day 30) proves the counterpoint: “on day 31, the lily pads don’t grow anymore because they filled the pond. There’s no more pond.” Even Gordon Moore said Moore’s law “has to stop sometime in the 2020s” at the scale of individual silicon atoms.
  • Tim’s steelman: the exponential is really stacked sigmoids — Betamax, film processing — with new groups finding divergent stepping stones. Becker: Kurzweil says exactly that, but “there is absolutely no reason why that is something that’s always gonna happen” — analog computing from 1,000–2,000 years ago doesn’t fit the trend, nothing on the horizon saves Moore’s law, and extending the rescue to every domain is “just wish casting.”

4. “They don’t want to be bodies. They want to be systems of pure information”

  • MacAskill’s What We Owe the Future afterword (reached by QR code) casts the good future as intergalactic colonization. Becker’s flat rejection: “we’re not leaving the solar system” — stars too far, near-lightspeed travel too hard, and Earth-like planets apparently rare. “This is our only home.”
  • The deeper error is functionalist abstraction: “we are not patterns in our brains, we are not even our brains. We are our bodies in our environment.” Even “substrate” smuggles in a computational analogy people forgot was an analogy — “Cognition is not computation” — and a single neuron is far more complicated than a node in an artificial network.
  • In response to Tim’s copy-to-Mars thought experiment, Becker agrees that environment is an important part of who we are. He adds that these thinkers treat intelligence as “an individual trait as opposed to something collective and social,” while Tim raises the possibility that a person removed from their environment might no longer be the same person.

5. Calculators, mirrors, and AI psychosis

  • Becker’s chosen analogy is the pocket calculator: it automated something once considered inherently human and enabled otherwise-impossible research — “computers are like telescopes for mathematics.” The difference now: “it’s language, not math, and so that makes it feel like something is sort of thinking and conscious.” His tell: “nobody’s asking if, like, AlphaFold is conscious.”
  • Tim’s pushback, invoking Mythos before it was taken offline: these models do things we do extremely well and keep improving — “something is validating their functionalist hypothesis.” Becker’s concession: “there’s definitely something going on there” — we’re learning what the statistical structure of language yields — but an LLM ingests more text than any human could in a human lifespan to be worse at language “in many ways than a five-year-old.”

6. Hallucination isn’t a bug state — it’s the only state

Becker says he does not think that is true and thinks these systems will “always gonna require human supervision because they are always going to end up hallucinating.”
  • His real objection to the word: it “implies that when a hallucination occurs, something different is happening than its normal functioning, and that’s not the case. They really only do one thing.” Escape needs a breakthrough that makes “LLMs themselves look like ELIZA” — and short of that, better models make errors harder to discern, “and that’s quite dangerous.”

7. “Zero to two” steps from doom: the doomer logic dissected

  • Becker corrects Tim’s paraphrase of Yudkowsky: not one or two steps to AGI — “he actually said zero to two. He’s not sure that we need any.” The doom chain: enough compute → the system wakes up → intelligence buys power buys intelligence → explosion → “the end of the world.”
  • Instrumental convergence, stated fairly: whatever the goal — Bostrom’s paperclips, chatbot engagement, stock-market profits — more intelligence and resources serve it, so power-seeking follows. Verdict: “I don’t believe that’s really true… not in the way that they would need it to be in order for this argument to go through.”
  • His counters: happiness isn’t obviously served by more intelligence, and if intelligence universally served goals, evolution would produce far more of it — trees reach their ends without nervous systems. Then a live self-correction when Tim notes goals are an intentional-stance cartoon: “it’s not even really right for me to have said that trees necessarily have goals… Seeing the world in terms of goals is itself a kind of mistake.”
  • Recursive self-improvement (I. J. Good via Kurzweil) collapses to the same two premises — intelligence as single-valued, and intelligence proportional to compute — “and the case for those two ideas is pretty weak.”

8. No conspiracy required: true believers meet capital that needs perpetual growth

  • Tim on the recent Anthropic fiasco — “make it make sense”: grifters don’t sabotage their own money machine. Becker: Yudkowsky, Bostrom, Ord and a lot of people at Anthropic are genuine true believers — “I just think that they’ve made a mistake.” The biggest problems “are social problems that require social solutions”: most climate technologies needed already exist; deployment and persuasion is politics.
  • On Altman’s claim that AI can solve climate change: in the unlikely event that we built a really intelligent, conscious machine intelligence based on existing technologies in the near future and asked it to solve the crisis, “the minute we turn it on, it would say, ‘Well, you shouldn’t have built me. Look at my carbon footprint.’”
  • The “useful idiots” mechanism from his Atlantic piece: believers preach that AI could mean extinction or “the power of the gods,” and an adjacent “giant system of power and capital that needs the promise of perpetual growth” finds the story legible because everyone was raised on the same science fiction. To the follow-the-money cynics: lucrative myths make it “more likely that they earnestly believe these things, not less likely.”

9. How AI risk entered effective altruism

  • The transmission chain, per Becker: “basically Nick Bostrom read a bunch of Yudkowsky, got into the AI risk stuff from there, and then started convincing people like Toby Ord and Will MacAskill.” Some in the community even call other existential risks “the gateway drug” to AI risk — which Becker thinks is “misguided.”
  • Longtermism’s arithmetic, as Tim summarizes and Becker confirms as “roughly right”: if quadrillions of future humans carry utility, present people become relatively much less valuable by comparison, diminishing current ethical concerns.
