Mavrookas’s origin line, delivered to 20 people in a garage: “The future of maritime autonomy right now is dependent on what we’re building right here in this garage” — a reminder he says he still gives them about “a much bigger garage.”

That’s why we’re actually building Corsair’ — so you don’t have to build ships.” Saronic began before the very first USV strike in Ukraine, when “a lot of speedboats could be very effective against a much larger fleet… wasn’t really obvious.” Corsair’s success funded the bigger problem, because “in some regards you just can’t replace gross tonnage.”
- His history lesson: the industry’s first watershed was 1981’s removal of the commercial shipbuilding subsidy, which “completely decimated” the international market for US ships and took supply chain and workforce with it; 1993’s 41% Navy budget decline was the second watershed that further turned the industry upside down — hence apartment complexes named “the Naval Yard.”
