5. Dyson’s university: pay the students, skip the debt
- His critique of higher education: crushing tuition debt carried “sometimes 20 years,” much of it never repaid, at institutions teaching “only half the year — it’s madness.” So Dyson built its own university; for seven years it needed a partner university, and none would cooperate “because they saw us as big competitors — we pay our students.”

Risk has become a thing I need to live with — I need to live on the knife edge all the time.” Still today: “it doesn’t keep me awake at night.”
- The father’s story, kept whole: fought in Burma — “we call it the Forgotten War” — returned in 1946, contracted cancer in 1949, spent seven years in and out of hospital, wanted to work for the BBC but never got the chance. “He had his life stolen from him at the age of 40, and I’m almost 80 — twice as long as he did.”
- His mother also died of cancer at 55. Asked whether he feared dying young: “No. That never occurred to me. I think it made me want to get the most out of life fast — impatient to live my life.”
7. Ballbarrow: other people’s money, 22% interest, and a lost patent
- Leaving Fry’s employ to “be my own man” — and refusing to let Fry fund the Ballbarrow — he now calls “a really stupid decision.” He borrowed instead from a brother-in-law and the bank, with a guarantee against his house, and interest rates went to 22%: “a company’s lucky if it can make 5% or 10% net profit, but we’re fighting a 22% penalty all the time.”
- The investors’ instinct when an ex-employee copied the Ballbarrow in America was vengeance; Dyson’s was “let him pave the way, and we’ll come sell our original version.” They sued “to no good effect.” Senra’s echo from three hours at Munger’s house: “you can’t do a good deal with a bad person… the lawyers are going to suck you dry. Just move on.”
- Distribution lesson: garden centers laughed — “that thing with the big red ball, no one’ll ever buy that” — but tiny newspaper ads sold it direct. “The entrenched professional will always resist longer than the independent consumer.” Others pushed the business toward conventional retail; later, when Dyson was pushed out, they took the company and the patent he had assigned to it.

- At home, a “bag full” vacuum turned out to have an empty bag lined with fine dust clogging the pores: “They call it a bag-full indicator. That’s a lie. It’s a bag-clogged indicator.” Angry, he built a cardboard-and-gaffer-tape mini-cyclone in the kitchen, attached it to his upright, “and I was pushing around the first vacuum cleaner that never loses suction.” His refrain — “it wasn’t very clever, really” — contrasts with Senra’s insistence that it was.

9. The Coach House years: in debt, no full prototype, funded by hope
- The starting position, stated without varnish: in debt since his student days, with no working full prototype — “just an idea, really,” eventually represented by a little cardboard model. Did he rate his odds? “No. Of course not. You don’t know you can solve it. You’ve just got to try” — same as today: “we don’t know that we can make a motor go at 130,000 RPM when existing motors only go 15,000.”
- Funding: a roughly £50,000 mortgage or bank-backed arrangement meant to last two years — Fry guaranteed £25,000 and Dyson £25,000. It took five. He rolled cyclone cones on £25 antique metal rollers from a junk store and soldered them by hand: “you can do things for nothing.”
- One or two prototypes a day, with an Edisonian discipline of one change at a time and recording what happens; his biggest problem teaching young people is their instinct to change 15 things at once. 12. The $750M car: “I learned absolutely nothing”
- In 2014 the industry predicted 2% electric cars by 2030 — “I thought, ‘They’ve got that wrong.’” Dyson had motors, filtration and air treatment, and batteries in development (“that’s pretty much an electric car”), so it built one. Then Dieselgate in 2017 pushed incumbents into EVs on which “they’re making a terrific loss.”
- The mechanism, spelled out: emissions rules apply to a maker’s fleet average, so a zero-emission model permits continued gas-guzzler profits — incumbents were prepared to lose money on EVs while making money on other vehicles. He does not drive it — “would you get in a car that cost you 750 million?” And the heterodox conclusion: “Everybody said, ‘You must have learned a lot.’ The answer is I learned absolutely nothing. It was fun to do” — half the people were hired by other manufacturers, while the other half moved to vacuum cleaners and other products.
13. The washing-machine mistake, fragile ideas, and intuition as compressed data
- The washing machine — with two drums, two motors, and a gearbox — launched at $1,200–1,300 against his $200–300 vacuums. Marketing said cut the price; “for the last time in my life, I listened to them… we didn’t sell any more, we just lost more money.” Non-executive directors told him to stop; alone, “I’d have probably gone on with it and put the price up.” Rule extracted: marketers should sell things, “not decide what the product should be or how much it should be sold for.”
- On ideas at inception: “ideas are so fragile, and they’re easily knocked away by anybody” — partners, friends, and everyone tried to blow the cyclone away. - Senra reads the book’s climax: after what Dyson estimated as roughly 11 years and a process spanning “the first sprouting of the idea” through research, prototyping, tooling, production, sales, and marketing, the first fully operational, visually perfect Dyson Dual Cyclone arrived on Dyson’s 45th birthday, May 2nd, 1992 — still heavily in debt. “I aim not to be clever but to be dogged.”
- Yet he resists pride: “it’s sort of self-serving… it’s never good enough, so you can’t be proud.” And satisfaction: “a pretty dangerous thing — there’s a kind of smugness to it, that I’m perfect and I can relax.
