Nate Silver puts Democrats at roughly 85%-90% to win the House, above prediction markets’ 80%-85%, while the Senate remains near a toss-up. The House call rests on Trump’s 38% approval, economic anxiety, the historic midterm penalty, incumbent backlash, and strong Democratic special-election results. The Senate requires four pickups, including wins in red territory, making it “a polling and math and numbers game.”
A Democratic Senate win would almost certainly arrive inside a broader blue wave that already delivered the House. Silver says the outcomes are “almost perfectly correlated,” with perhaps a 1% chance Democrats take the Senate but not the House. Gas prices and the duration of the Iran conflict are the clearest swing variables; absent a major surprise, House control looks “fairly baked in.”
Gavin Newsom is fading rather than ascending, falling from about 25% to 15% in Democratic polling and from roughly 33% to 22% in prediction markets. Silver thinks Newsom’s defense of the Biden-Harris legacy is strategically backward in an era when “almost every election now is a change election.” Jon Ossoff offers youth plus a purple-state win, while AOC could channel anti-establishment energy that party elites continue to underestimate.
Silver sees no evidence that the disputed Los Angeles result was fraudulent and believes California accurately tallied the ballots cast. Different voter groups use different channels and vote at different times, so late shifts are not independent statistical anomalies. Yet he calls California’s weeks-long count “completely unacceptable” and “a sign of a failed state,” arguing that the slow, varied process creates avoidable distrust.
Partisanship, not voting mechanics, is the dominant force in American elections. Silver estimates that 43 of 50 states’ 2028 presidential choices can already be predicted with 97% confidence: “Partisanship is the gravity.” California has become a Democratic “machine state,” but he attributes its one-party outcomes to polarization rather than rigging.
The strongest post-Trump platform may combine anti-oligarch economics, support for small business, cultural moderation, competent government, and optimism. Silver identifies culturally conservative but economically progressive voters as unusually neglected, especially young men who want control over their own destiny rather than “all that much hand-holding.” He views Jon Ossoff as potentially the most electable Democratic archetype: young and progressive, but not performing Newsom-style combat.
The socialist-capitalist divide now appears to break around age 40, reflecting sharply different formative economies and media systems. Silver links the divide to when voters came of age—during or after September 11, the Great Recession, and periods of economic anxiety—alongside fragmented media and social platforms. Meanwhile, Democratic losses among entrepreneurial Hispanic and Asian-American voters complicate any full-throated socialist turn.
Prediction markets are becoming the natural venue for sharp capital because conventional sportsbooks restrict successful bettors. Silver said perceived sharp bettors can be limited by DraftKings and MGM, while prediction markets do not impose those limits; he also expects hedge-fund participation to grow. His Knicks wager illustrates the method: perceived playoff mispricing, observable defensive improvement, and repeated high-stakes performance represented “real” signal rather than fandom or noise.
